Named in honor of Jimmy Santiago Baca, The Jimmy Santiago Boca Library, Writing, and Publishing Center was established by the New York State Literary Center on the 5th floor of Monroe County Jail http://www.nyslc.org/jimmysantiagoyr2.htm. Two state of the art iMacs, software for desktop publishing, art supplies, and books and periodicals relevant to the lives of the incarcerated youth were purchased with a grant from a private foundation. Incarcerated youth were selected to work in The Jimmy Santiago Boca Library, Writing, and Publishing Center through a rubric developed by Dale Davis and Rochester City School District teachers with sheriff's deputies.

Writing by the incarcerated youth was at the center of The Jimmy Santiago Boca Library, Writing, and Publishing Center https://www.nyslc.org/studentwriting0708.htm.

Portfolios of the writing of individual participants who worked with Dale Davis in The Jimmy Santiago Boca Library, Writing, and Publishing Center were created with the youth for them to take with them upon release to demonstrate positive accomplishments while incarcerated.

Incarcerated youth working with visual artists Richard Muto and Margot Muto created self-portraits http://www.nyslc.org/visualart2yr.htm that were reproduced by the Office of The Sheriff, County of Monroe and hung in the offices of the Sheriff's Department.

The youth reflected on creating their self-portraits https://www.nyslc.org/writing-self-portraits.htm.

At Monroe Correctional Facility, percussionist and steel drum specialist Ted Canning again worked with incarcerated youth in NYSLC’ classes on ensemble drumming, found instruments, introduction to steel drums, and steel drum band music.

Incarcerated youth at Monroe County Jail worked with Dale Davis to create a play, "Where Is Tomorrow Coming From," that juxtaposed Rochester history with present day Rochester. The play emanated from the fact that Monroe County Jail sits on the one hundred acres of land originally purchased by Colonel Nathaniel Rochester https://www.nyslc.org/tomorrowfrom.htm. Director and actor David Shakes cast, rehearsed, and directed the play performed by incarcerated youth for students / inmates, sheriff's deputies, teachers, and invited members from the community.

Kamilah Forbes, actor, director, playwright, and producer, known for her strong commitment to the development of creative works by, for, and about the Hip-Hop generation, Co-Producer for the Peabody award-winning show "Russell Simmons' HBO Def Poetry Jam," assistant director to the TONY award-winning Broadway tour "Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam," Executive Producer of the Apollo Theater, https://www.apollotheater.org/about/leadership/, presented a professional development session for teachers who collaborated with the New York State Literary Center in its programs titled How To Motivate Reluctant Learners with Theater.
