Music in jail? Maybe on your small commissary radio, but
that’s about it. To me playing music is limited to
whatever can come out of your mouth or be banged on the
table. The drums and other percussion instruments that
were provided to us were a very good way for some of my
problems. I felt like I was actually doing something
good for a change. That is not always so easy when
you’re in a place like jail. You almost lose hope at
times, but while I was in the drum class it was the
complete opposite. There was not a second where we were
not smiling. Also the cooperation that was needed to
create such a synchronized rhythm is a rare thing. I
think if I had something like this to do while I was
free it could prevent me form getting into trouble. I
would really enjoy a type of music transitional class
when I return home. Thank you for allowing us to have
the steel drum class it was a very good time, I learned
a lot, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes
music. Pleas make this program available for others.

Steel Drums
Drumming lifted me,
I
didn’t feel like I was in jail anymore.
I
was part of something that made other people’s spirits
rise
Music brings people together,
for
a split moment everyone in here,
in
this gloomy place, was at peace
The
drumming brought plenty of smiles that day
Nine
green suits
all
filled with happiness,
sticks hitting metal
in
rhythm,
hands moving along the drums
like
dominoes falling,
a
heavenly sound
like
raindrops hitting
a
windowsill
On a
nice summer day.
Once
the drumming was done
the
melody kept going,
and
I
won’t let it stop

Drumming is not something I though I’d like, but I gave
it a try and sort of got a groove for it.
I
liked the different sounds that certain instruments
make, some loud and some high, some soft
and
some low.
The
drumming class helped me relax. When I was angry, it
helped me calm down and
recuperate.

Skills
are what we developed together.
Training
is the hard work we did.
Energy
and dedication are what we needed.
Encouragement
is for helping one another.
Long
work we all did to make sure everything was right.
Decision
is for respecting every one’s opinion.
Rules
were for the rules of music
Unity
is we all played together as one.
Music
is what we made as a group
Sound
was good for everyone
